The tracker

Every job you check, from the first check to the outcome

The Tracker keeps every job you have checked in one place, grouped by stage. It is free.

Your job search, furthest along first

The tracker opens with a card for each stage, furthest along first: Offer, Interviewing, Applied, Saved and Checked. Jobs you set aside under Not for me, and closed jobs, fold away at the foot.

Each row shows the role, the company, where it stands ("Applied 12 October", "Round 2 tomorrow, 10:00") and the match percentage. Each row has one button for the next step:

  • Checked: Save it, or Not for me to hide it.
  • Saved: Mark applied.
  • Applied: I got an interview.
  • Interviewing: Prep plan, See the rounds, or Continue while a practice is running.
  • Offer: Record outcome.
  • Not for me: Bring back returns it to Checked.

Interviewing lists the soonest round first. Under Applied, Closest puts the jobs with the fewest must-haves missing first, and Newest sorts by date.

Practice jobs and target jobs

The ⋯ on a row holds the rest. Mark a job as a Practice job, a company to warm up on, or a Target job, the one you want most.

When a target has an interview booked and no practice job has one yet, the tracker suggests, once, booking a practice company first. A real interview elsewhere is the best rehearsal.

Delete this job removes the job and both documents for good.

Open a job for everything about it. The stage line at the top shows how far it has come. Under it, Next says what is left to do, with the buttons for it. Saving and marking applied work from here too.

Adding an interview

When they invite you, press I got an interview. Give the date and time, or tick No date yet, and choose the kind: Screening, Technical, HR, Final or Other. A Private note is for you only.

The time is in your time zone. If the interview is in another one, change it for that round, and Beacon shows both.

Booking the round moves the job to Interviewing and Beacon builds a prep plan for it. Chapter 5 covers the plan.

Interview rounds

Interview rounds on the job page lists them in date order, numbered for you. An upcoming round has Add to calendar, Change date, Edit and Cancel, and a link to its Prep plan. A round with no date sorts last until it has one.

Once a round has happened, it offers a Debrief. Chapter 7 covers that.

Heard back

Answering the heard-back email

A week after your last round, if no outcome is recorded, Beacon emails to ask: Offer, Rejected or Not yet. One click opens a page that asks once more, and records the answer. Not yet changes nothing.

You can switch this email off in Settings, under Notifications.

Outcomes and closing a job

What happened with this job? What happened with this job?
What happened with this job?

Record outcome asks what happened, and each answer says whether the job stays open:

  • I got an offer moves it to Offer, still open.
  • I got the job, They turned me down and I withdrew close it as Hired, Rejected or Withdrawn.
  • From an offer: I accepted it, I turned it down or They withdrew it.
  • Before you apply: Not applying.

Closing is final: a closed job cannot be reopened. Its rounds, debriefs and CV changes stay in your account, and what your practice and debriefs showed carries into your next plan. If the job is on a free job, closing ends that too.
